Cross Docking

Southern Gulf Packaging & Logistics understands that productivity, quality, and safety are your primary concerns. Taking that into consideration, we have also made those concerns our main priorities.

We specialize in cross-docking services to help businesses and organizations multiply demand satisfaction rates, lessen warehouse costs, and cut back delivery lead times.  Cross-docking reduces the warehouse and labor costs of a common warehousing type by categorizing received items at the loading dock and matching them with pending requests for fast, direct shipment to the retail store.

What is Cross Docking?

Cross-docking is a logistics measure where products from a manufacturing facility or supplier are delivered directly to a retail store or customer with little or no material handling within the bounds. Cross-docking does not completely eliminate material handling but it lowers the need to store the items in the warehouse.

Types of Cross Docking

We have several cross-docking options available for overseeing the warehouse. You can exploit the variety of cross-docking we have, which reflects the types of products you send.

Continuous

It is deemed as the simplest type. In this case, the terminal has a main area through which products are proceeding and conveyed instantly from one vehicle to another.

Consolidation

Small purchases are consolidated into a larger cargo to experience economies of scale. This is generally used by small-package industries and less-than-truckload (LTL).

Opportunistic

This includes shifting goods directly from the receiving dock to an outbound shipping dock to suffice the client’s marketing order. The process can be crucial in improving customer service.

Deconsolidation

A large inbound truck is loaded with a wide range of items and it stops at the terminal to unload all the products onto the cross-dock warehouse. Then, the products are separately loaded into outbound trucks.

Supplier

This type combines incoming items from different vendors into a mixed product pallet that gets shipped to the customer upon obtaining the first product.

Retail or “Hub and Spoke”

Products from different manufacturers are kept on a single central site. They are then sorted for shipment to various destinations.

Process of Cross-docking

Cross-docking isn’t complex, though it’s not easy.

  1.       Inbound trucks arrive at the entrance docks to the warehouse
  2.       The products are unloaded and categorized and loaded into trucks waiting on-site
  3.       The recently loaded trucks ship the products to the clients

Normally, products are transported to a warehouse where they are stored for some time before being delivered to the vendor or chain store.

In cross-docking, goods are received from the standard mode of transportation —truck, ship, airplane— and quickly repacked and loaded back toward another means of shipment to be delivered to the retailer. Occasionally, some items are displayed at the warehouse, but the purpose is to transfer the product with little to no handling or storage.

Cross Dock Benefits

Reduce inventory – When the amount and timing of supply can be controlled to accurately meet demand, the need for huge safety stocks is reduced.

Cost-saving – Reduce costs in various aspects of your supply chain particularly in transportation, labor, and storage areas. With cross-docking, you’ll no longer require a warehouse and additional workers to unload and load cargo as it enters and leaves the facility.

Control – Businesses get to manage product levels with a more detailed approach. This ensures every location receives specifically what it needs to match customer demands.

Reduces labor needed – Since cross-docked freight is no longer stored at a warehouse, less handling is needed. Your company can save on labor costs when you unload and time the goods that enter, ensuring that all handling occurs at a stretch.

Shorten Lead Time – Your goods are being transferred faster and more efficiently, which indicates they’re reaching your clients more quickly. This enhances your customer service and reliability for quick delivery rates.
